The Jungle Binoculars

Edward and Sarah hesitantly pushed open the doors leading to the attic. It was their go-to hiding space for when they were in a spot of trouble like they were now. “Let’s check out that box over there” whispered Edward, shuffling toward the corner of the small, narrow room, “It looks so old. I wonder what’s in there” They heaved open the lid and peered inside.

“Looks like nothing more than papers to me,” mumbled Sarah.

Just as they were about to shut the lid, Edward exclaimed, “Wait what’s that? It looks like a pair of binoculars. Maybe we could go birdwatching later?” Edward picked up the small package and just as his fingers met the hard metal, he suddenly vanished leaving only the binoculars behind. Sarah, frantic with worry, then also touched them and sure enough, she too disappeared.

“Sarah!” cried Edward, “Where are you?”

“I’m fine,” she replied, “Where are we?”

“I think…I think this is the Amazon jungle. It’s just like in the books…” Edward said with a huge grin on his face. They surveyed their surroundings: taking in all the sights and sounds of the dense greenery and exotic animals that lived in the jungle.

“Wait. What’s that?” said Sarah, slowly stepping back as a shiver ran through her spine.

“I…I… It’s a snake. RUN!” shouted Edward. They both turned around and, as fast as their legs could carry them, ran. Right enough, just on their tail was the biggest, fastest boa constictor they could have ever imagined.

Just when they were about to give in, they saw the same pair of binoculars they had seen in their attic which now seemed a distant memory, at the top of the tree. They scrambled up it and Sarah reached out and touched them. At that moment, she was whisked away, followed shortly by Edward.

At last they found themselves back in their attic. “I can’t believe that really happened.” said Edward, panting.

“Nor I but I think it’s high time we go down,” replied Sarah, taking a breath of relief.

“Funny the clocks are at the same time they were when we left them,” stated Sarah with a hint of curiosity.

“Well,” said Edward grinning, “It is magic.”

  1. The dialogue in the story is superb at evoking that innocent, childlike friendship between characters. It reminds me of Robin Williams’ movie ‘Jumanji’. As they too are sucked into the game and embark on a series of adventures in a jungle-like setting.

  2. This book is suspenseful and makes the reader want to know what’s about to happen next to the characters! Great job👏👍.
